Toronto embarked on am ambitious major transit infrastructure project in 2011 to replace the congested Eglinton Avenue corridor with a new 19-kilometer light rail line. The partially buried Eglinton Crosstown LRT has since become a marquee project for the city of Toronto.
With its anticipated completion later this year, let’s look at the NEEA member (KONE, Otis, Schindler, TK Elevator) participation in ensuring each transit station has the elevators and escalators it needs to safely and reliably serve the public for years to come.
With 25 stations and a number of connections to other transit systems, this multi-billion-dollar project was no small feat. Two NEEA members are proudly leading the installation of new state-of-the-art transportation systems to serve transit goers.
The first project features a NEEA member installing 111 heavy-duty, commercial-grade escalator units across the Eglinton Crosstown line. These escalators incorporate the latest safety innovations to ensure reliable and smoother operations for the riding public. It also incorporates energy efficient technology to reduce the energy and environmental footprint of the transit system overall, without compromising on quick and easy access for users.
The second project will see a NEEA member install elevator systems into 16 of the Eglinton Crosstown’s 25 stations, for a total of 51 new elevators. These machine-room less elevators are highly customizable and will fit well within the modern station designs the LRT will have. As with all members, these elevators push the innovation envelope with new safety and design features, and special attention towards mitigating energy use.
Additionally, these elevators will be fully connected to smart technology, which allows each elevator to communicate potential faults to maintenance teams, keep continuous track of the unit’s health, and predict technical issues before they lead to breakdowns.
NEEA looks forward to the completion of this transformative transit line and welcoming you on board our member products!
